Introduce about Waterfall Trail | WHITE TANK MOUNTAIN REGIONAL PARK | Hiking It When Nobody is There!
The Waterfall Trail is arguably the most popular destination at White Tank Mountain Regional Park. It attracts large crowds, especially when the waterfall is flowing. On a late afternoon in March, we got the whole place to ourselves and enjoyed peace and solitude at the trail’s end, which we hear is a rare thing.

A world of discovery awaits at White Tank Mountain Regional Park, right outside of Phoenix, AZ. If you are looking for a complete Sonoran Desert experience, you’ll find it here. You will see evidence of cultures that lived here hundreds, and into the thousands, of years ago, in the form of petroglyphs. You also have a great chance of spotting wildlife here such as mule deer, rabbits, rattlesnakes, and many more. And of course, you will enjoy many scenic vistas within the beautiful desert chaparral.
One of the most popular trails in the park is the Waterfall trail. It’s an out and back trail, about one mile long (2 miles round trip). The elevation gain is negligible, and a portion of the path is paved, making the trail suitable for all ages and fitness levels.
On the trail, you will see many excellent examples of petroglyphs, made by the Hohokam culture, with some believed to be 3000 years old!
The highlight of the trail is a waterfall, located at the very end. You will first pass through some of the white granite and tinajas (tanks) that White Tank Mountain Regional Park is famous for, and eventually, end up at cool pools deep in the shade of high cliffs.
If you visit at the right time, you may even see water flowing. Don’t expect to have your mind blown, however, as the waterfall is often a gentle trickle, but nonetheless a spectacular sight.
Of course, there are never guarantees that water flows here, so please keep that in mind! Regardless, we would still recommend this hike since there is so much to see and learn.
There are many interpretive signs that teach you about the history, geology, flora, and fauna of the area.
This trail is very popular and can be crowded. We’d recommend trying to avoid weekends if possible.
In the summer months, it may also be uncomfortably hot, which may serve as a deterrent for the crowds, if you can tolerate it.
We consider this a gem of Phoenix, AZ. The park is amazing, offers camping and many other recreational activities, and is among the finest that the Phoenix area has to offer. Make it a point to visit the next time you are out this way!
