Introduce about Crossing Mountain Passes in the Winter – Driving Stevens Pass, Washington, USA
Living in Washington now we have mountain passes and deal with things like tire chains that were completely foreign concepts to us just a few years ago, even though we moved from a snowy part of the country. I’ve seen a lot of questions out their recently about whether it is safe to drive across the passes and what it is like. That is a really hard question to answer since it really depends upon you comfort level and your vehicle.
Riding with someone experienced for your first crossing is always a great option, but in leu of that taking a short virtual ride might be the next best option. This is a video from our recent trip across US 2 Stevens Pass. Hope it helps!
What do you think? I found the two way traffic and passing with no lines on the road a bit unnerving.
Conditions:
Whether you are heading to the pass for skiing, a hiking trip, visiting Leavenworth, or traveling to the other side, you need to be prepared for the weather. The DOT updated pass conditions and has several web cameras here:
We often check even as we are making the crossing to see if anything has changed. The conditions here are “Traction Tires Required.” This videos is just level 2 of 4. The levels are Traction Tires Advised, Traction Tires Required, Chains Required (excluding 4WD/AWD), and Chains Required on All Vehicles.
Chains and Traction Tires:
You can find some clarification on tire and chain requirements here: Check you owner manual because many cars require special chains and regular ones could cause serious damage.
Prepare:
Even in these conditions much of the road looked more like a trail than a highway. This was a weekday and we didn’t encounter a lot of cars, but I could imagine this turning into a mess in a hurry if there were. You will want at least warm clothes, food, and water just in case and a full winter emergency kit with things like flares, shovel, snow brush, etc. is a good idea
