  1. I learned not too long ago that a mountain pass is not just the summit—the summit is just the highest point—it's the also ascent and descent from either direction. In this case, westbound and eastbound. I like how you know that for Lookout Pass going westbound the pass/ascent begins at I-90 milepost 16 in Montana and the pass/descent ends at I-90 milepost/exit 57 in Idaho. And of course reverse that for going eastbound. I kind of wish every mountain pass had begin pass and end pass signs for both westbound/eastbound and southbound/northbound.

Sometimes it's explained. Like the Wikipedia article for Deadman Pass in Oregon, which also takes you over the Blue Mountains Summit, says that Deadman Pass/Blue Mountains Summit is the entire stretch of I-84/US 30 between Pendleton and La Grande in Oregon. But for the most part, you can't find information like that. Like here in Washington State where I live, it's fairly easy to tell where the pass starts and ends for a pass like Snoqualmie Pass. But I still don't know where the passes start and end for Chinook Pass and Cayuse Pass. I still don't really even know where the summit, the highest point, for Cayuse Pass is. It doesn't help that, according to the WSDOT page, it says Cayuse Pass is carried by SR 123, but the Wikipedia article for it says it is carried by SR 410, the state route that carries Chinook Pass.

    But, anyway, great video!

  3. I have driven this in all the weather there is. One time a truck hauling cars caught on fire in the east bound lane a mile or two past Lookout. No way to go around. We just sat there and waited. Always go to the bathroom in Wallace, before heading up. If I go to Montana, I prefer Hwy 200 from Sandpoint, Idaho to Ravalli, Montana. Less traffic and the locals know the road.

  4. I went to Idaho once for a short business trip and LOVED IT! Each day when I got off work, I drove as far as I could in a couple of directions and got back to my room late to snatch some rest for the next day of work. I couldn't get enough of the scenery!!! There's a certain feeling I got when I was there and your videos bring it back to me! I want to go back one day and take my dear wife. We are so closely matched I'm sure she will have the same feeling about Idaho!!! Thanks for these beautiful videos!!!

  5. I drove this when I was 21 years old. Blew a tire outside Superior, MT and had to drive through Lookout Pass on a donut and like 3 feet of snow the night before. Taught me how to drive!
